The group chat
Fast, and clustered around your industry, your estate and your age. Fine for a dry run of the guide. Dishonest as evidence of anyone else’s behaviour. People also tell their friends what you asked.
The fastest sample in Nairobi is ten people who have done this before: a founder’s WhatsApp, a university class, an agency roster from last year. They show up. They also already know how a research session is supposed to sound.
A participant is not a lead and not a download. They are someone whose recent life matches the question, who can spare the time, and who is paid for that time in KES. If you cannot say what they must have done, and what disqualifies them, you are not recruiting yet. You are collecting opinions from whoever answers.
Afritesting keeps a panel of people in Kenya and invites them when a study fits their location, work and behaviour. You do not receive the list. You receive scheduled people for the study you paid for, after a screener that does not flash the right answer. Phone and email are how we reach them and pay them — M-Pesa or bank — once the completion is valid.
The argument is the work: who is in, who is out, and what you will refuse to conclude. Write that down and the recruiting method almost chooses itself.

Students have time, English, and newer phones than the people who will pay school fees or run a shop. They are a segment. They are not “Kenyan consumers”.
Facebook and WhatsApp blasts skew to whoever is cheapest to reach that day, and they attract people hunting the incentive. You will spend the study spotting who invented a habit to qualify.
Agencies and freelance recruiters often keep a circle of reliable attendees. Reliability is not freshness. Ask when they last sat a study, and cap repeat participants. If the audience is shop owners, read recruiting SME owners — they are rarely on a consumer list at all.
The act, not the identity. Bought cooking oil, paid a supplier, sent money, rode a boda to work. Identity words (“middle class”, “digital native”) are not checkable.
“Ever” includes people who stopped years ago. Name a window, and name counties or neighbourhoods. “Urban” is not a place.
Industry staff, your customers’ employees, anyone who builds the category. For market research, also decide whether you want current buyers, lapsed buyers, or people who refuse the category. Those are three studies.
A screener that asks “Are you our target customer?” creates professional respondents. Ask about ordinary recent activities, include the qualifying one among distractors, and keep the study topic vague until they have qualified. Afritesting checks screeners for questions that give the game away.
Incentives sit inside the price you approve, in Kenyan shillings, paid after a real completion — not for starting a survey, not for qualifying. Surveys from KES 500 a response. A typical 45-minute interview or moderated test is KES 3,500 for a common consumer profile. Harder people, including many business owners, are quoted higher, and you see that number first.
There is no subscription and no seat fee. You are not buying a panel login. If the fit is wrong, say so: during the early service we replace mismatches and no-shows without another recruitment fee. That only works if your definition of “wrong” was written down.
Participants who want to be on the other side of this can join the panel. If you are designing the session itself, the method pages are more useful than another sourcing essay: user testing, usability, or surveys.
Write a brief with the behaviour, how recent it must be, who is excluded, the place, and the device. Afritesting matches against that from a Kenyan panel, screens without showing the answer, and schedules people into your session. Friends, campuses and recycled agency lists all lean toward people already near the research industry.
In Kenyan shillings, by M-Pesa or bank transfer, after a valid completion. The study price you approve includes the incentive. People are not paid only for qualifying, and the incentive is not a promise of airtime for clicking a link.
Say so. During the early service, participants who fail the agreed screener, and no-shows, are replaced at no extra recruitment fee. The screener has to be specific enough that “not qualified” is obvious.
No. You get the details needed to run the study you paid for. You do not get the panel as a database, and you should not market, hire, or follow up outside that study.
Send the behaviour, the window and the exclusions. That is enough to price a study and start matching.
